Shion: Getting Started

This document contains information about downloading, installing, and running Shion.

Prerequisites

Shion requires the following to be in place:

  1. A Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard".

  2. A PowerLinc V2 USB INSTEON controller.

  3. At least one INSTEON device (SwitchLinc, LampLinc, ApplianceLinc, etc.)

If you do not have one or more of these items, you can purchase them from the Audacious Software store.

Installation

  1. Download latest version of Shion from the main Shion page.

  2. Open the downloaded file and copy the Shion application to your local disk. /Applications is a good location.

  3. If you have previously installed Perceptive Automation's Indigo application, Shion will not work until you delete the kernel extension that Perceptive Automation places on your system during Indigo installs. See this forum post for details and a fix.

Running Shion for the first time

  1. Launch Shion. You will see the window below:

  2. Add a new device by selecting New Device from either the File menu or by right-clicking the table on the left:

(You may edit or delete any initial devices by right-clicking on the device name in the left table.)

  3. A panel will appear:

Give the device a name (such as Lava Lamp) and enter the device's INSTEON hexadecimal code. If the device is a dimmer (such as a LampLinc or SwitchLinc), click the Dimmer checkbox.

  4. Click Close. The device will appear in the left table.

  5. Repeat as necessary to add more devices.

Working with devices

Devices may be activated two of ways using the main window.

  • Click the round button next to the device name in the left table. If the device is already active, the button will be blue. If it is not active, it will be clear. Clicking this button toggles the device on and off.

  • If the selected device is a dimmer, you can adjust the level of the device by using the slider to select one of nine states. The left-most state of the slider is "Off", while the right-most state is "On". States in between are varying levels of brightness.

If the selected device is not a dimmer, only two states will be available on the slider
